NEW BRITAIN — Police have obtained a newly retouched photo of a woman found murdered near a dumpster in 1995 in the hopes of discovering her identity and that of a woman found in Massachusetts in the same time frame.

City police and Massachusetts State Police have been trying to identify the women since their bodies were found days apart in September and October of 1995.

The Massachusetts Jane Doe was found outside the entrance to Tolland State Park in Tolland, Mass., near an area where campers fill up on water or dispose of trash. But she had no sleeping gear, police said. She is estimated to be in her 30 to 45 years old.

The woman in New Britain was found wrapped in two sleeping bags Sept. 28, 1995, near a dumpster behind a Hartford Road shopping plaza. The New Britain Jane Doe is estimated to have been 17 to 20 years old.

Police in both states now believe the women were related and at least the older woman spent time in the Albany, New York area.

Her “Trends” sweatshirt was sold in upstate New York in 1994. The tax stamp on a pack of Carlton cigarettes found near her body indicated they were sold in the same region in June 1995, police said.

Representatives of both departments attended a press conference with New York State Police in September in Albany to announce newly discovered evidence and ask the public if they might have known the women.
